When I turned 25 I had too many questions about life, although I could not understand the significance of few must do's in life I have been in pursuit to get an answer about these must Do's. One of them is Why should we get married? Whats the benefit of getting married? Is it that important that you have to get married? Why there is such thing called marriage in the first place? Why do we have to get married to a female? What If a person decides to live unmarried through his whole life? Well! few of these questions have straight answer but many of these answer might land you in a confused state as well. So I started pursuing, thinking, reading getting different opinions.. As you read through you will find my understanding about Marriage and its significance.
To start with I would like to sum up few sayings from Veda's...
1. Marriage is one of the 16 "Samskaras" as explained in the vedic scriptures.
I will not get into what are those 16 "Samskaras" but lets spend some time in knowing whats written about marriage.
Veda's explaination : A human life is a continuous progress from one form of intelligence to another, so which means until you die you will be improving your intelligence. By what % that's what makes you happy or sad. Thats the very reason we have examples of a man earning less would lead a much better and happy life than one who is earning more.
The point is more we gain more we distribute, hence the marriage. To elaborate marriage is done to pass your experiences and learning to next generation so that they wont repeat wasting their time in figuring out what they have to do or spoil their life by doing things which they should not be doing. Vedic scriptures has a detailed explanation about different rituals which takes place during marriage.
1. Naandi - Getting Started
2. Nischitaartha - Confirming the alliance
3. Ankurarpana - Creation of the alliance by lighting the fire (a type of Homa).
4. Laja Homa - Yagna.
5. Snathakam - Graduation Ceremony
6. Upanayanam - (No need to explain)
7. Kasi Yatra - Journey of the groom to Kasi for the sanyasa and bringing him back to the house by the brides parents for marriage.
8. Kanya Danam - Offering the daughter
9. Pani Grahanam, Saptha Padhi, Mangala Sutra Dharana - Seeing, touching, walking and tying the knot.
10. Grihapravesham - Taking bride to the in laws house.
11. Shobhanam
12. Garbhadanam
Although, people do get married as per Vedic marriage sequence. We need to understand each of its significance and why this order.
This sequence is mainly created for one reason.. to lead a meaningful and happy life in order that to happen whoever takes the responsibility in the house should know when, where and what to do. That knowledge would only come by experience or by proper guidance or by preaching from the ancestors. Hence, what we have is.. before marriage the groom should know (in case of hindu) almost every possibilities to lead a proper life or at least how to manage different situations which may arise after marriage.
Veda also says although marriage is described as continuation of knowledge to the next generation it is also a part of learning every man should go through.
To sum up " Marriage is not done to have kids and continue the generation, it is done to lead a meaningful life and to pass the experience to the younger generation which in turn improves human race".
Needless to say, by know you should have understood that marriage is very distinct from Love.
After reading and understanding it in my own way, I wanted to know what is our generation is thinking about marriage?
People get married in india because....
1. To have Sex.
2. Parents are asking them...
3. They are in love with someone and want to live with loved one throughout the entire life.
4. Everybody are getting married so why shouldnt I?
5. Marriage is very important cause at your old age you need some one to look after.
6. Marriage is very important cause you need to have someone to share your feeling else you will become mad.
7. Marriage would give you sense of responsibility.
8. Marriage would teach you how to manage things..
9. People will learn to be responsible only after marriage..
etc etc etc...
These answers always wondered and puzzled about the reasons they chose to get married. When I thought about these only reason I found was.. No one has really understood the significance of Veda. Our generation would not have found these reasons to get married..
Anyway, through this small blog all I wanted to convey is that "Marriage has a greater significance in your life than any of the reason you find.. you will find yours when you reach a certain level in life"
Having said that I would like to open this blog for further discussion to share views from different people.. please contribute..and share with as many people you want..
